Sierra Vista, Arizona
Southwest Gas’s new Sierra Vista location provides the community with a new 12,000 SF administrative office and service facility. The administrative portion of the building features an open, flexible office plan, conference rooms and training spaces for company employees and community use during off-hours. The interior is defined by high, contemporary wood ceilings and ample amounts of natural light. The exterior of the building consists of CMU walls and steel framing, clad in varying colors of metal panels that create large, framed openings to the North and South. The facility also includes a welding shop and a large warehouse for parts, tools and materials storage and delivery. Deep overhangs and canopy structures provide shading to the building throughout the year and create large, comfortable, exterior work areas. The building’s materials, colors and forms are complimentary and responsive to the immediate surroundings and the desert context.
The site features parking for visitors, employees and fleet vehicles and equipment with photovoltaic shade structures. The 5 acre site accommodates drainage swales, a cistern for rainwater collection, and storage bins and racks for a variety of materials such as sand, rock, and metal pipe. Large, vehicular circulation needs are addressed with generous turning radii and wide travel lanes.
Although not a pre-engineered building, the facility incorporates many of the principles associated with efficient metal building design – simple forms, repetitive structural elements, regular bay sizes, and efficient steel shapes – to create a cost effective design solution.
